Why We Recommend Waiting Before an In-Spirit Reading

When you have just lost an animal you love, the need to know that they are okay can feel overwhelming.
For many people, the first instinct is to reach out immediately. They want reassurance that their companion is at peace and that they are safe. There may also be words they wish they had said or questions they never had the opportunity to ask.
We understand that feeling completely. It is one of the reasons we feel so honoured to offer In-Spirit Readings.
One of the questions we are asked most often is why we recommend waiting at least 21 days before arranging a reading. This guideline is based on our formal training and the experiences we have had through our work. It is intended to create a respectful space for both the animal’s transition and the guardian’s grief.
Allowing Time for an Animal’s Transition
From our experience, many animals seem to move through a gentle period of transition after they have crossed over.
Every soul is different, and no two journeys appear to unfold in exactly the same way. Some animals seem to settle very quickly, while others may need more time.
There is often a sense that these early days are important. Just as we need space to begin processing our grief, animals may also benefit from being allowed to settle peacefully into the next stage of their journey. Waiting before a reading gives that process room to unfold without feeling rushed.
Giving Yourself Space to Breathe
The waiting period is also intended to support the guardian. The first days after losing an animal can be filled with shock, disbelief and overwhelming emotion. You may replay the final moments repeatedly, question the decisions you made or search desperately for anything that might ease the pain.
Grief does not disappear after three weeks. However, the initial shock may begin to soften, allowing you to approach a reading from a place of connection rather than complete emotional desperation.
We have found that this can create a calmer and more meaningful experience for everyone involved.
Why We Use a 21-Day Guideline
The 21-day recommendation is a respectful framework rather than a claim that every animal follows the same timeline. Some animals may feel ready to connect earlier, while others may prefer more time. As with so much of this work, there is no single process that applies perfectly to every animal or guardian.
The guideline simply allows time for transition and reflection before communication takes place.
You may come across communicators who are comfortable connecting immediately after an animal has passed. Different practitioners follow different training and approaches, and we respect that.
Waiting at least 21 days is the approach that aligns with our own training, values and experiences over the years.
You Can Still Speak to Your Animal
Waiting for an In-Spirit Reading does not mean you need to stop speaking to your animal. You do not need a formal communication session to tell them how much you love them, thank them for the life you shared or let them know how deeply they are missed.
Speak to them while walking through a favourite place. Tell them about your day. Write them a letter or sit quietly with a photograph and think about the memories you shared.
We believe that animals continue to understand the love directed towards them after they have crossed over.
Reflecting on What You Would Like to Ask
The waiting period can also give you time to think about what you hope to receive from an In-Spirit Reading. During the first days of grief, the questions may focus entirely on reassurance. You may simply want to know that your animal is safe, at peace and still connected to you.
As the initial shock begins to settle, the conversation you truly want to have may become clearer. You may begin to think about the life you shared, the lessons your animal brought into your world or the messages that could offer comfort in the months and years ahead.
Giving yourself time to reflect can help you approach the reading with questions that feel meaningful and supportive.
Creating a Peaceful and Meaningful Connection
Our hope is always that an In-Spirit Reading leaves you feeling lighter than you did before it began.
Waiting does not lessen the love you have for your animal. It does not weaken your connection or place them further away from you.
From our experience, allowing a little time can help both guardian and animal come together again in a way that feels peaceful, respectful and deeply meaningful.
The bond remains. The love remains. The waiting period simply gives both of you a little space before reconnecting in a new way.
