Do Our Animals Visit Us After They Have Crossed Over?

One of the questions we are asked more than almost any other is whether our animals still visit us after they have crossed over.

Closely linked to this is another question that many grieving guardians carry quietly: do our animals miss us too?

From our experience, the bond between an animal and their family does not appear to end when physical life does. Over the years, we have been fortunate enough to connect with hundreds of animals in spirit, and one of the themes that comes through time and again is how connected they still feel to the people and animals they left behind.

Their physical journey may have come to an end, but the relationships they formed often continue in ways that feel quieter, more subtle and sometimes unexpected.

How Animals May Continue to Visit

Animals in spirit rarely describe trying to prove that they are still around. Instead, they often seem to carry on loving their families in much the same way they always did. They check in, observe what is happening at home and spend time with the people and animals who were important to them.

Sometimes, they also find small ways of making their presence known. During In-Spirit Readings, animals will often show us the signs they leave behind. For some families, this may be something found in nature, such as a particular flower, a bird that repeatedly visits the garden, butterflies, feathers or a colour that begins appearing at meaningful moments.

Other animals speak about familiar places in the home. They may show us a chair they loved, the side of the bed where they slept or the sunny patch in the garden where they spent their afternoons.

What continually amazes us is how personal these signs are. They often reflect the animal’s personality, routines and relationship with their family, which is why no two people necessarily experience the same thing.

Feeling Their Presence

A visitation is not always something you can see. Many guardians tell us that they felt their animal’s presence before noticing any visible sign. They may be lying in bed and feel the familiar weight of a cat settling against their legs exactly where they always slept.

Others describe feeling something brush past them in the kitchen or instinctively stepping over the place where their dog used to lie before remembering that they are no longer physically there.

We have even had guardians apologise for thinking they imagined these moments, only for their animal to describe doing something very similar during a communication session.

We cannot prove what another person is experiencing, and we would never want anyone to feel pressured to interpret every unusual sensation as a visitation. We can only share the patterns that have emerged through our work and the comfort these experiences have brought to many families.

Dreams That Feel Different

Dreams are another experience that comes up regularly. People often describe visitation dreams as feeling different from ordinary dreams. They may remember every detail when they wake, sometimes even years later. Their animal appears healthy, peaceful and entirely themselves.

There is not always a conversation. Sometimes they are simply walking together, sitting side by side or sharing a familiar routine.

Often, it is the feeling that remains after waking that makes the experience feel meaningful. There may be a sense of calm, connection or reassurance that stays with the guardian long after the dream has ended.

Can Other Pets Sense Them?

We also receive many questions about the animals who remain at home. Guardians may notice their dog suddenly wagging their tail at an empty doorway or their cat watching something move across a room that no one else can see.

We cannot say with certainty what another animal is experiencing in those moments. However, it has often been moving when an animal in spirit later describes visiting home, particularly when they shared a close bond with another pet in the family.

Many animals seem especially aware of younger, older or more sensitive companions. Some describe checking in on them, offering reassurance or simply continuing to spend time near them as they adjust to the loss.

Do Animals Miss Their Families?

Animals in spirit do continue to think about their families.During readings, they often bring through memories, speak about favourite routines and acknowledge what is happening at home. Some mention how another pet is coping, while others ask us to reassure a particular family member.

There is never a sense that the bond has been forgotten or that the relationship has simply ended. Where their experience seems to differ from ours is in the way they understand separation.

As people, we often experience grief through absence. We miss the physical presence of someone we love and long for life to return to the way it was before.

The animals we have connected with do not seem to carry that same sense of separation. Instead, there is often a deep feeling of peace and acceptance. They appear to understand that their physical life has ended, while the relationship itself continues. They do not seem to miss us through the same pain we feel. They remain connected.

Their Awareness of Our Grief

One of the things that has always stood out to us is how aware animals in spirit are of the grief carried by their families. They know when someone is struggling. They recognise when a guardian is blaming themselves and understand how deeply their family wishes they could have had more time together.

Rather than focusing on their own loss, many animals spend a large part of the reading trying to reassure the people they love. This is especially common when euthanasia was involved.

We have never experienced an animal expressing anger or resentment towards their guardian for making that decision. Time and again, they show an understanding of why the choice was made, particularly when they were living with pain, illness or physical limitations.

They do not want their families to remain trapped in guilt. They want them to remember the years of love they shared rather than only the final day.

Try Not to Search for Signs

One thing we gently encourage people not to do is spend every day searching for signs.

When you are desperately hoping for reassurance, it can become exhausting to analyse every feather, butterfly, dream or coincidence.

From everything we have experienced, animals in spirit seem more interested in comforting us than testing us.

A meaningful sign often arrives naturally. It may appear at a moment when it is needed most, rather than when someone is actively searching for it.

It is also worth remembering that every person experiences connection differently. Some guardians have vivid dreams soon after their loss. Others notice signs in nature or feel a quiet sense that their companion is still near.

Some may never experience anything they would describe as a visitation. None of these experiences is more meaningful than another. Not receiving a sign does not mean your animal has forgotten you or that the bond you shared was less important.

Love Beyond a Physical Lifetime

Perhaps the greatest comfort this work has given us is the understanding that love does not seem to be limited to a physical lifetime.

The animals we have connected with have not forgotten the people who cared for them. They continue to speak about their families with love, gratitude and affection.

Many remain interested in what is happening at home. They may describe watching over children, checking in on another animal or simply visiting a familiar place from time to time.

If they choose to visit, it rarely seems to be because they have unfinished business. More often, it is because meaningful relationships do not suddenly stop when one chapter comes to an end.

Missing them is one of the hardest parts of grief, and that feeling may never disappear completely. However, the animals we connect with do not want their guardians to remain trapped in sadness.

They want us to remember the life we shared, smile when their memories return and trust that the bond has changed rather than disappeared. Sometimes, they may simply be stopping by to say hello.
